Tanzania: Ordinary Custodial Chapter

On September 4-8, 2017, the first part of the 3rd Ordinary Custodial Chapter of the Provincial Custody of St. Maximilian M. Kolbe, in Tanzania, was celebrated at the friary in Dar es Salaam.

The Minister Provincial, Friar Wiesław PYZIO, presided over the Chapter. Others present included the Assistant General for the African Federation of Conventual Franciscans (AFCOF) Friar Tadeusz ŚWIĄTKOWSKI; and the Secretary General for Education, Friar Louis PANTHIRUVELIL, who led the spiritual conference before the Chapter.
From September 7-8, the new Custodial Government was formed, consisting of Custos, Friar Dariusz SZYMBORSKI (first four-year term); the Vicar Custos and Custodial Secretary, Friar Benson MAPUNDA (first four-year term); the Custodial Econom, Friar Mieczysław BEDNARCZYK (first four-year term); the Custodial Exactor, Friar Jerome MUNISHI (second four-year term); and Custodial Definitor, Friar Laurian LASWAY (first four-year term).
Part two of the Chapter will begin September 11, 2017.
At that time, the Capitulars will discuss and make needed decisions about the life and apostolate of the Custody by developing a “priorities plan” for the next four years.
Before the opening ceremony, a Tanzanian, Friar Francis Daniel HIZA, professed his solemn vows into the hands of the Minister Provincial. Many faithful attended the celebration.
The mission in Tanzania was founded in 1988 by the friars of the Province of the Immaculate Mother of God in Poland (Warsaw), as a gesture of gratitude to God and the Church for the canonization of Father Maximilian Kolbe.
The Custody currently has thirty-three friars distributed among four friaries. It has seventeen friars in solemn vows, (ten of whom are Tanzanians), sixteen friars in temporary vows, three novices and ten postulants.
The apostolate of the friars in Tanzania is expressed through the following activities: the promotion and formation of local vocations, novice formation (the AFCOF novitiate in Arusha), spiritual assistance to local religious congregations, parish ministry (five parishes), publishing activities, education and teaching ministry (grade school and university), humanitarian assistance and social development of local communities.
