On Saturday, May 9, 2026, at 4:00 p.m., a conference entitled: “Rivotorto in the Evangelical Identity of Francis and His First Friars” will take place at the Shrine of the Sacro Tugurio [Sacred Hut] of Rivotorto in Assisi. The event is organized as part of the 800th anniversary of the death of St. Francis of Assisi.

The conference will explore the significance of Rivotorto, regarded as one of the birthplaces of Franciscanism (“hic primordia fratrum minorum”), where between 1208 and 1211, the fraternity of the friars was formed, the Gospel was embraced as a way of life, and the service to lepers began.

Speakers:

  • Pietro MARANESI: “The Decisive Encounter with the Lepers”;
  • Felice ACCROCCA: “The ‘Propositum Vitae’: The Gospel as a Rule of Life”;
  • Grado Giovanni MERLO: “Friar Francis and His Friars at Rivotorto.”

The initiative also aims to promote the nearby Church of Santa Maria Maddalena, while the conference proceedings will be published in the new series, Quaderni del Tugurium [Notebooks of the Tugurium].
