March 1, 2025, marked the 30th anniversary of the reactivation of Radio Niepokalanów. It is the oldest Catholic and private radio station in Poland. It is also the only radio station in the world founded by a saint: Friar Maximilian M. KOLBE.
This reactivation was foreseen by St. Maximilian. In 1938, Radio Niepokalanów ceased broadcasting as soon as Kolbe had made two test broadcasts. He wrote to the then Minister General of the Order, saying: “Our radio station, which, on the day consecrated to the Immaculata, began to spread her glory through the air waves to the whole world, is now silent because of the aversion of non-Catholic elements; but there is no doubt that in the end, the Immaculata shall be victorious, as always.”
On September 1, 1994, the Province of the Immaculate Mother of God in Poland (Warsaw), under the initiative of the then Guardian of Niepokalanów, Friar Kazimierz WIĘSEK, was granted a license to operate a local, social-religious radio program. The first broadcast took place on Ash Wednesday, March 1, 1995. In 2025, the 30th anniversary fell on the first Saturday of the month. It was an occasion to rededicate Radio Niepokalanów to the Mother of God. At the start of Mass that day, Friar Zdzisław DZIDO, Vicar Guardian of the Niepokalanów friary, reminded the faithful about this important date: “Today, through the hands of the Immaculata, we want to thank God for the 30th anniversary of the reactivation of Radio Niepokalanów. (…) We congratulate the radio staff, the Director, Friar Grzegorz KLIMCZYK, who is praying during this Mass of thanksgiving and supplication, and we thank God for all our listeners, benefactors, staff, and for our whole radio station. We also ask for the graces we need so that God will bless the faithful and grant the grace of heaven to the deceased who worked at the radio station.”
The goal of Radio Niepokalanów has always been the same from the beginning: to win the whole world to Christ through the Immaculata. St. Maximilian used to say, “Just listen to the radio. The Immaculata empowers it, so that those who cannot read or who are far from the Church, may be able to hear the Lord through the airwaves.”
Today, of course, everyone can read and the Church is always nearby, but new threats are emerging. Radio Niepokalanów proclaims true Catholic values that are under attack today. It gives peace in the noisy world of the media. It encourages us not to be discouraged when evil goes mad, and it shows us how the Immaculata fights evil.
