Mission in Denmark
Mother Province: Province of St. Jerome in Croatia
After the suppression of our friaries by the Evangelical Protestants, a Conventual Franciscan presence continued in Denmark with a few friars from the Province of Holland, and a few more from Poland who ministered to Polish immigrants. In 1992, the Province of Our Lady of Consolation in the USA opened a friary in Roskilde that lasted until 2013. On two occasions, this community was assisted by friars from the Province of Romania.
Currently, the mission in Denmark has three solemnly professed friars and one friary.
Copenhagen: Stenosgade – St. Francis of Assisi Friary
On February 2, 2017, the Conventual Franciscans reestablished their presence in Denmark with the arrival of Friar Tomislav CVETKO from the Province of Croatia, and Friar Tomaž MAJCEN from the Province of St. Joseph in Slovenia. In 2018, they were joined by Friar Stephen BEJO from Provincial Custody of the Immaculate Conception and Bl. Bonaventure of Potenza in the Philippines. Today, the mission in Demark is joint mission (twinning) of the Provinces of Croatia and Slovenia. The Province of Croatia has assumed responsibility for the mission. The friary was canonically erected on November 23, 2022.
The friars mainly carry out pastoral ministry at two parishes in Copenhagen and another parish in Nuuk, Greenland, where they serve several groups of faithful of different nationalities, mostly faithful from Denmark, but also from England, France, Italy, Croatia, and more.
