They were conducted in the communities of the Provincial Curia in Bacău, the seminary in Roman and the Caritas Pacea Foundation Center, also in Roman, Romania.

The meetings were requested by the Minister Provincial, Friar Damian-Gheorghe PĂTRAȘCU. The theme of the meetings was the 100th anniversary of the opening of the Conventual Franciscan mission in China (1925/2025).
During the meetings, Friar Paolo FIASCONARO, the Director of the Franciscan Missionary Center of the Federazione Inter-mediterranea Ministri Provinciali (FIMP) presented a new book entitled, “China – The Missionary Dawn of the Friars Minor Conventual.” It was written in collaboration with the late Friar Matteo LUO. The book details the history of the Order’s mission to China, which began in 1925. Today, the Order’s missions are found in forty nations around the world.
Those attending the meeting at the seminary in Roman included friars from the formation community and professors from the Theological Institute. Those attending at the Provincial Curia in Bacău included Provincial Definitors, postulants, novices, clerical students and eight formators. Everyone came together for a day of fraternity and mission animation.
During the book presentation, Friar Paolo detailed the tumultuous historical events prior to the foundation of the mission in China. In fact, [in Europe] there had been two suppressions of religious orders and the subsequent confiscation of their assets. In 1800, the Order numbered 25,000 friars, but, by the end of World War I (1914-18), that number had fallen drastically to 1481 friars. Nevertheless, the Order managed to recover from the vocation crisis and opened its first mission in China by sending eight friars there (six from Sardinia, one from Sicily, and one from Tuscany).
During the meetings, Friar Paolo showed a documentary film which had been shot at the historical sites of the mission in China. He also showed a short video on the summer experience of the Missionary Center on the banks of the Tiber River in Rome.
Everyone was moved by the account of the mission’s history, and it was also noted that there were two missionary friars from Romania: Friar Giorgio GABOR and Friar Andrea BENCHEA, who left for China in 1934, and returned to their homeland in 1947, due to political changes.
Earlier, in April and May, the Director of the Missionary Center met with the friars gathered at the Provincial Chapters of the following Jurisdictions: Northern Italy, Central Italy, the General Custody of Assisi, Naples, and Sicily-Calabria. He also met with the formation communities in Brescia, Osimo, Nocera Inferiore [Italy] and the friars of the friary of St. Anthony at the Baths (La Vigna) in Rome.

Friar Paolo FIASCONARO, Director of the FIMP Missionary Center

ngg_shortcode_0_placeholder

On May 23 and 24, 2025, two days of mission animation were organized for the Province of St. Joseph, Spouse of the B.V.M. in Romania.
