On January 12-16, 2026, the General Government of the Order conducted a course for newly elected Ministers Provincial, Provincial Custodes, and their respective Provincial and Custodial Secretaries. The course was taught in the Chapter hall of the Conventual Franciscan General Curia located in the Friary of the Twelve Holy Apostles in Rome. The course, prepared and led by the Minister General and his Definitory, was designed for the new leaders of the Federations to provide an up-close understanding of the General Curia, its offices, and the key practices involved in their service.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The course opened on Monday, January 12, with greetings from the Minister General, Friar Carlos TROVARELLI. He introduced the participants to the General Government of the Order and the General Curia and highlighted the Chapter Motions guiding the six-year term. Following this, Friar Emil KUMKA offered a Franciscan reflection, placing the service of government in the context of the Order\u2019s tradition. Each day of the course was structured around prayer with the Curia community. Every morning, the participants celebrated Office of Readings, Morning Prayer, and Mass in the Basilica of the Twelve Holy Apostles. During the evening, they prayed Evening Prayer in the friary chapel. They also shared meals in the refectory of the friary. All of this took place in a spirit of simple and authentic fraternity.
\nOn Tuesday, January 13, Friar Carlos TROVARELLI presented Chapter Six of the Constitutions, exploring the meaning of the service of authority and co-responsibility in fraternal life. In the afternoon, the General Procurator, Friar Maurizio DI PAOLO, gave a lecture on the Promptuary<\/em>, giving concrete examples of the main juridical practices required of Ministers Provincial, Custodes and Secretaries in collaboration with the General Procurator: cases to be submitted to the Holy See, internal procedures, the proper use of forms, observance of the law of the Church and the proper law of the Order.
\nOn Wednesday, January 14, he conducted the second part of his lecture and left space for questions and practical clarifications.
\nThursday, January 15 was dedicated to learning about the offices of the General Curia. The Secretary General, Friar Tomasz SZYMCZAK, explained the practical matters of his office and guided the participants on a visit to the General Secretariat. Friar Alejandro PALACIOS presented the General Communications Office. He explained its role in coordinating information within the Order, supporting the Provinces, and promoting clear, fraternal communication faithful to the mission.
\nThe General Archivist, Friar Domenico CASTIGLIONE, guided a visit to the General Archives, showing ancient and significant documents and emphasizing the importance of historical memory and the preservation of records. He even cited an example of \u201cfake news\u201d dating back to the early days of the Franciscan Order.
\nIn the afternoon, the members of the General Financial Office, Friar Leszek \u0141UCZKANIN and Friar C\u0103t\u0103lin FABIAN, addressed topics such as the Provincial budget, economic solidarity, taxatio<\/em>, and other financial management tools to foster transparency and communion among the Federations.
\nOn Friday, January 16, the program underwent some changes. In the morning, the Director of the Projects Office, Friar Valerio FOLLI, spoke about the possibilities for supporting and coordinating projects in the various Jurisdictions. This was followed by a group photo in the cloister, next to the column of the Immaculate Conception, as a fraternal keepsake of the meeting. Next, Friar Silvestro BEJAN explained the work of the Order\u2019s Database and Statistics Office, emphasizing the importance of keeping friars\u2019 data accurately updated\u2014not merely as a technical requirement, but as a sign of respect for each friar and his personal history, and as an essential resource for institutional memory, statistical analysis, and the preparation of Provincial and Custodial directories. Once the data is correctly entered, each Federation can easily generate its own directory.
\nDuring the week, the participants also visited the General Postulation Office. The Postulator General, Friar Raimundo Valdo NOGUEIRA, explained the work of the Postulation Office, the ongoing causes of saints, and the ecclesial and spiritual significance of this service. He then guided the friars on a visit to the office. Towards the end of the course, His Eminence Cardinal Dominique MATHIEU, OFM Conv., Archbishop of Tehran\u2013Isfahan of the Latins, spoke to the participants about his pastoral experience in Iran and provided a vivid perspective on the mission of the Order in the context of dialogue and being a minority presence in the country.
\nThe meeting was made possible through the organization of the General Government and by the presence of the General Definitory, which included most of the Assistants General (AFCOF, CEF, FALC, FEMO, and FIMP); some Assistants General were unable to attend. The community of friars of the General Curia generously hosted this event. Heartfelt thanks to the Guardian, Friar Francesco CELESTINO, and all the friars of the friary for their generosity, hospitality, and shared prayer. Special thanks as well go to the interpreters who ensured simultaneous translation into the four official languages of the Order. The interpreters for Spanish speakers were Friars Javier RAM\u00cdREZ RICO and Friar Jes\u00fas Manolo RODR\u00cdGUEZ MORALES; for English, Friar Robert CALLEJA; and for Polish, Friar Tom\u00e1\u0161 LES\u0147\u00c1K and Friar Tomasz SZYMCZAK. Thanks to their service, the lectures and presentations\u2014delivered in Italian\u2014were fully accessible to the participants who came from various Federations and language backgrounds.
\nOn Friday evening, the Minister General concluded the course by thanking the participants and offering best wishes for their fruitful service in their respective Federations. The participants departed on Saturday, January 17, 2026. The course was a time of intensive work, formation, and getting to know one another. It was also a time of fraternity and shared prayer.
\nIt is hoped that this experience will help the new Ministers Provincial and Custodes, along with their Secretaries, carry out their roles with greater awareness and serenity, while maintaining a fraternal, ongoing relationship with the General Government and leading the communities entrusted to them with renewed zeal.<\/p>\n
