The Most Reverend Franz SCHARL, Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Vienna, presided.

The needed restoration began in April of 2025. More that seventy years had elapsed since the last restoration effort was conducted in 1950.
Between April and December of 2025, the church on Alserstrasse (the Conventual Franciscan Church of the Most Holy Trinity in Vienna) underwent some major renovations. During the work, large-scale frescoes were discovered in the dome, which had previously appeared monochrome. The original plan had simply been to repaint the interior of the church, but almost by chance frescoes depicting the four Evangelists came to light. The murals were discovered beneath several layers of paint and plaster accumulated over the centuries. They date back to the church’s Baroque construction period (around 1700).
Construction of the church began in 1694 (probably designed by Matthias STEINL). It is one of the most important Baroque churches in the suburbs of Vienna. It was built at the end of the wars against the Ottomans. The church is also famous for some significant historical events, including the funeral mass for Ludwig van Beethoven, which was celebrated there in 1827.
The discovery of these frescoes was a significant find for Vienna’s Josefstadt district and for Viennese art history. It further enriches the city’s cultural heritage. What began as a routine maintenance project has thus transformed into a significant historical restoration, which will allow visitors to admire the church’s original Baroque splendor.
The Mass of Thanksgiving was celebrated in German. Members of the Italian-speaking community of the Italian Catholic Mission in Vienna were also present. Our friars serve as their pastoral leaders. Others attending the Mass included the Assistant General for the Centralis Europae Foederatio (CEF), Friar Vincenzo COSATTI, the President of the Federal Monuments Office (Bundesdenkmalamt), Dr. Christoph BAZIL, and numerous authorities involved with the renovation work.
As Bishop SCHARL aptly emphasized in his homily: “During the renovation of a church or a house, dust is removed, things are cleaned, and elements that were already there but no longer visible are brought to light again; the same happens in our spiritual journey: nothing new is invented, but what has always been present is rediscovered and revealed.”

Friar Vincenzo COSATTI

ngg_shortcode_0_placeholder

On Sunday, January 11, 2026, the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord, the friars of the Provincial Custody of St. Leopold and St. Nicolas of Flüe in Austria-Switzerland celebrated a Mass of Thanksgiving to mark the conclusion of the restoration of the Parish Church on Alserstrasse in Vienna, Austria.
