The liturgy marked the ninety-fourth anniversary of his death and was held at the Sacro Cuore alla Noce Parish Church in Palermo (Sicily) Italy.

In a church packed with faithful, devotees of Venerable Friar Luigi paid homage to the young man who aspired to be a saint. Moreover, his short life continues to challenge the Church, which struggles to communicate with young people.
The Mass was presided over by Friar Salvino PULIZZOTTO, the Minister Provincial of the Italian Province of the Immaculate Conception (Sicily-Calabria)
Friar Luigi, (born Filippo Lo Verde), was born on December 20, 1910, in Tebourba, Tunisia, to parents from Palermo who had emigrated to Tunisia for work, but returned to Palermo when he was still an infant. He was raised in a deeply religious environment. Lively, even mischievous, he soon discovered the joy of silent prayer. At the age of twelve, he announced his decision: he wanted to become a friar in order “to become a saint.”
He joined the Conventual Franciscans in 1922, received the habit on January 21, 1923, and began a journey characterized by study, fervor, and illness. In Sicily, during his years of formation in Mussomeli, Montevago, and Palermo, he suffered from persistent anemia. Yet nothing dampened his desire: “to become a saint, a great saint.” He made his temporary profession on December 8, 1927, and received the tonsure and minor orders in 1931.
On October 15, 1931, while visiting his parents, his condition deteriorated significantly. He died on February 12, 1932, at just twenty-one years of age, whispering: “How sweet is the passage to Heaven!”
Since May 16, 1992, his remains have reposed in the Sacro Cuore di Gesù alla Noce Parish Church in Palermo, placed in a marble tomb in the Chapel of the Immaculate Conception on the right side of the nave, near the sacristy.
On June 14, 2016, Pope Francis authorized the decree recognizing his heroic virtues, formally declaring him Venerable.
In his homily, the Minister Provincial, Friar Salvino, reminded the faithful that holiness is measured not by years, but by intensity. At a time when the Church seems uncertain in its engagement with young people, this twentieth-century youth speaks with surprising relevance. He was restless, conflicted, fragile in body but tenacious in spirit. He was not a hero carved in marble, but a twenty-year-old with fire in his heart who risked everything for the sake of Christ. Perhaps that is what filled the church—a longing for a faith lived in earnest. Friar Luigi founded no institutions, wrote no theological works, and did not live long enough to become a priest. Instead, he did something greater: he took his desire for God seriously. Ninety-four years later, Palermo still remembers him.

Davide ROMANO – pre-postulant

ngg_shortcode_0_placeholder

On February 12, 2026, a solemn Mass was celebrated in memory of the Venerable Friar Luigi LO VERDE, OFM Conv.
