The friars of the mission purchased seven acres of land in the Mzimba district, near the city of Mzuzu, to build a formation house. However, the site is in a remote area without access to the municipal water supply, making an independent water source necessary. In this context, the construction of a well proved to be an essential prerequisite for starting construction and ensuring the future sustainability of the community’s activities.
The project began on January 19, 2026, when the friars received the funding. To ensure the work was carried out diligently and competently, the friars hired Water for Life Boreholes Inc. (Malawi), a company that specializes in drilling and maintaining wells. Members of the local community were also involved, offering support at different stages of the work.
The project was carried out in several phases. First, a geophysical survey was conducted to identify the most suitable site for drilling. This was followed by the mobilization of equipment and personnel. Of the three possible sites identified, the one closest to the future formation house was chosen, allowing the well to be better integrated into the community’s plans.
Drilling then began in the presence of the friars. Water was found at a depth of 43 meters (141 ft.), and drilling continued down to 50 meters (164 ft.). This was a moment of great joy and satisfaction for everyone involved.
The final stage included installing the hand pump system, with a 125 mm (5 inch) smooth PVC casing pipe, a 125 mm slotted PVC casing pipe, and a PVC end cap. The pump was installed and tested, and a protective slab was built around the water collection point.
There were no major operational difficulties during the project. The main challenge was the fluctuation in material costs: as prices continued to rise in Malawi, the friars had to negotiate with multiple suppliers to stay as close as possible to the original specifications.
The project has had a very positive impact. It has provided the friars with a reliable water source for farming and for building the future formation house, and it will also support activities related to raising livestock and local sustainability.
At the same time, the well has had a significant impact on the local population, providing access to clean, safe water for domestic use, improving sanitation, and reducing the need to rely on distant or unsafe sources.
For the future, the friars plan to promote ongoing cooperation between the religious community, Church authorities, and local leaders to ensure the well is properly managed and maintained, and that any issues can be addressed quickly.
The friars of the mission in Malawi, together with the local population, express their sincere gratitude for the support received. This contribution has been more than financial―it has made it possible to carry out a project that truly improves people’s lives. The well will continue to bring lasting benefits to the community and the surrounding area.

Project Information

Conventual Franciscan Jurisdiction: Mission in Malawi of the Province of the Franciscan Protomartyrs in Zambia

Country: Malawi

Location: Mzuzu

Type of Project: Formational and Social-Health Project

Date of Proposal: 2025

Start Date: January 19, 2026

Direct Project Coordinator:

Friar Nathan Mumbi KAKUBO

Total Project Cost: US $4,155 (= €3,550.00)

Funding Status: Project funded by the Italian Province of St. Anthony of Padua (Northern Italy) of the Friars Minor Conventual (PISAP FMC); and through the charitable organization Missioni Francescane Emilia Romagna (MiFrER ETS):

€3,550.00

Funding Status:

The project is already fully funded and implemented.

Projects Office

ngg_shortcode_0_placeholder

Project No. 43/2025 – Drilling of a Well for the Mission in Malawi The mission in Malawi of the Conventual Franciscan Province of the Franciscan Protomartyrs in Zambia presents its final report on the Formational and Social-Health Project No. 43/2025, entitled “Drilling of a Well,” aimed at ensuring access to a safe and reliable water […]

[98,5254,132,135,148,5015
1470
post-96670","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-afcof-en","category-completed","category-federations","category-general-offices","category-news","category-projects-office","tag-malawi-en
["GET
