Doing this will help improve the living conditions of the local population and strengthen the self-sustainability of the Franciscan presence in the country.

Burkina Faso is a West African country with a population of more than seventeen million people. Over 1.9 million people lack reliable access to safe drinking water. In many areas, suppliers treat water with large amounts of chlorine, which affects its taste, while water from some hand pumps can cause health problems.
To address this situation, the Conventual Franciscan friars in Sabou launched a drinking water production and distribution initiative, packaging the water in sealed plastic pouches. A well located on the grounds of the mission yields fifteen cubic meters [4,000 gallons] of water per hour. Laboratory testing has confirmed the water’s high quality. The project sterilizes the water using ultraviolet radiation, preserving its natural taste while ensuring its safety.
The growing demand for drinking water now makes it necessary to expand operations. Currently, the friars lack the necessary resources to meet the population’s water distribution needs. They also wish to increase the workshop’s production capacity. For this reason, the project includes the purchase of a 10-12 ton truck for water transportation and distribution, a three-wheeled cargo motorcycle for local distribution, and a new machine for the production of packaged drinking water in sealed plastic pouches.
This initiative will make it possible to reach a wider population with safe, quality drinking water and, at the same time, contribute to strengthening the self-sustainability of the Franciscan mission. The project will be directly coordinated by the Provincial Delegate, Friar Giacomo DI CIANO, who will be responsible for its implementation. The initiative is currently in the fundraising and purchasing phase.

Project Information

Conventual Franciscan Jurisdiction: Provincial Delegation in Burkina Faso

Country: Burkina Faso

Location: Sabou (Diocese of Koudougou)

Type of Project: Social and Self-Sustainability Project

Date of Proposal: 2026

Direct Project Coordinator:

Friar Giacomo DI CIANO, Provincial Delegate of the Delegation in Burkina Faso

Email: ofmcbf@gmail.com

Expected Duration of the Project:

Twelve months

Direct and Indirect Beneficiaries:

People of the communities served by the mission in Sabou

Families who will have easier access to safe, quality drinking water

The Franciscan mission and its pastoral and social activities

Local communities who will benefit from the expansion of the distribution network

Project Components:

Purchase of a 10-12 ton truck for water transportation and distribution:

16,139,200 XOF (€24,603.67)

Purchase of a machine for the production of packaged drinking water in sealed plastic pouches:

1,850,000 XOF (€2,820.26)

Purchase of a three-wheeled cargo motorcycle for local distribution.

1,600,000 XOF (€2,439.14)

Total Project Cost:

19,589,200 XOF (€29,863.07)

Local Contributions:

1,960,000 XOF (€2,988.00)

Contribution Requested:

17,629,200 XOF (€26,875.13)

Current project status:

Ongoing fundraising and planning for project-related purchases

How to Support the Project

You can support Project No. 20/2026 by making a financial contribution, indicating the project number and title in the payment description.

Account Holder: CURIA GENERALIZIA DEI FRATI MINORI CONVENTUALI

Bank: UniCredit S.p.A.

IBAN: IT66B020080507400000525951

BIC / SWIFT: UNCRITM1Y82

Payment Description: Project No. 20/2026 – Expansion of drinking water production and distribution operations (Burkina Faso)

<div style="background-color: yellow;
