Every three months, the Guardians of the Province of St. Elizabeth in Germany gather for a “Guardians’ Conference.” The conferences alternate between videoconferences and in-person meetings. On May 25, 2025, the six Guardians of the Province met with the Minister Provincial, Friar Andreas MURK, at the friary in Würzburg, Germany.

The main topic of the conference was “leadership.” Starting with the willingness to serve that we promised during profession and ordination, Friar Andreas explained the guidelines that concern the office of the Guardian, based on what is provided in the Constitutions. A long discussion followed on very specific questions relating to leadership, especially when the issues are complex and difficult. The friars benefited from exchanging their experiences.
Friar Andreas then presented a number of very practical topics, including accounting, data protection and health insurance. He also presented his book, published a few weeks ago, in which he addresses controversy, polarization and division from a Franciscan perspective.
Finally, the friars focused on the topic of “Provincial development.” With just over two years to go before the next Ordinary Provincial Chapter, the Provincial Definitory has initiated a process of synodal dialogue that will involve all of the friars. The process will take an honest look at the concrete reality of our life and evaluate it. In view of our charism and our Order, we must then reflect on how and where we, as Friars Minor Conventual, want to live in Germany in the future. The Provincial government is relying on the broadest and most intensive participation of the friars possible at the next Chapter, so that it can make sound and well-founded decisions.
