On September 14, 2026, the new Seraphicum Student Residence was inaugurated at 3 Via del Serafico in Rome. The residence is the result of a collaborative effort between the Friars Minor Conventual and the Ministry of Universities and Research.
The residence offers 173 beds, distributed among 108 single and double rooms, with affordable rates that include utilities, internet access, and housekeeping. Thanks to an agreement with DiSCo Lazio [Lazio regional student-services agency], the residence reserves fifty-two beds for students with limited financial means.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by Anna Maria BERNINI, Minister of Universities and Research; His Eminence Cardinal José Tolentino de MENDONÇA, Prefect of the Dicastery for Culture and Education; and Friar Carlos Alberto TROVARELLI, Minister General of the Order of Friars Minor Conventual. They took part in the traditional ribbon-cutting ceremony.
Friar Maurizio DI PAOLO, Procurator General of the Order, mentioned that the decision to convert these spaces into a university residence grew out of listening to the needs of the local community and society. He also emphasized the friars’ joy at seeing these living spaces once again filled with young people, as well as their joy in being able to offer them not only a place to live, but also an environment marked by attentiveness, care, and genuine relationships.
This vision reflects the identity of the Student Residence as presented by the Pontifical Theological Faculty of St. Bonaventure (Seraphicum): a secular, inclusive, and welcoming home, inspired by the Franciscan spirit, where academic study can be combined with personal growth, community, and fraternity.
The inauguration is part of the Order’s ongoing reflection on how to best use and sustain its facilities. In the months leading up to the inauguration, the Seraphicum itself had emphasized the need to rethink its unused spaces in light of its charism and mission. The repurposing of these spaces as a student residence represents a concrete response to that vision, using the spaces to address the needs of young people and their right to education.
