Friar Carlos A. TROVARELLI, the Minister General of the Friars Minor Conventual and 120th successor of St. Francis in that role, has officially announced that Friar Marco MORONI has been confirmed for a second four-year term as the Custos of the General Custody of the Sacred Convent of St. Francis in Italy (Assisi).
The election took place on December 20, 2024, at the General Curia in Rome. However, it was made official on December 30, 2024.
Here is what the Minister General said as he announced the news to the friars of the Custody:
“I am pleased to announce that, in accordance with our Order’s legislation and as we approach the Ordinary Chapter of the Custody of the Sacred Convent of St. Francis in Assisi, during the recent 42nd session of the General Definitory, after due discernment, Friar Marco Moroni has been elected to his second term as General Custos. Our choice was motivated by his work ethic, dedication, hospitality, and willingness to bear the responsibilities associated with the role of Custos. We also wanted to give continuity to the important commitment that Friar Marco provides in the context of the celebrations of the Franciscan Centenaries, which are an opportunity for renewal of our life and witness.”
The friars of the Sacred Convent and the General Custody rejoice over Friar Marco’s reappointment. They support him in prayer and extend their warmest wishes for his continued good service. As indicated by the Minister General, this is a delicate and complex assignment, one that is focused on promoting the good of the Franciscan community, the pilgrims, and the visitors to the Basilica of St. Francis. It also involves productive interaction with various social and ecclesial entities, Franciscan and non-Franciscan, as well as institutions connected with the friar community and the Basilica itself.
The Ordinary Chapter of the General Custody of the Sacred Convent will take place in Assisi, at the Sacred Convent, on February 3-8, 2025, and on March 25-28, 2025.
