On October 27-29, 2021, after a long break due to the pandemic, the Definitors of the Province of St. Elizabeth in Germany and the Provincial Custody of St. Leopold and St. Nicolas of Flüe in Austria-Switzerland met for the first time to conduct a joint Definitory meeting at the friary in Graz, Austria. The friars from Germany arrived a day earlier to conduct the first part of their meeting.

The joint Definitory meeting began with a lecture by Friar Bernhard HOLTER, OFM, on the 800th anniversary of the Earlier Rule. Much of the session was used to discuss the latest version of Franciscan Discipleship. Comparing it to the German translation, the Definitors shared their comments and were generally satisfied with the document.
The friars also took the opportunity to visit the large Maria Hilf Friary in Graz, where four friars currently live: two from Romania, one from India and one from Austria. Their main task is to take care of the Maria Hilf (Mary Help of Christians) Parish and Shrine. The Guardian, Friar Petru FARCAŞ proudly presented the famous “Minoritensaal” [Minorite Hall] which was extensively renovated over the last two years. The hall is generating some excitement because it can now be used again as a conference room, and as such, is in demand throughout the region. The cloister of the friary has been extensively renovated as well. Currently, the exterior is still being painted. The renovation of the interior of the friary is being studied, for the purpose of using its rooms more efficiently.
Besides working on the planned topics, the joint Definitory meeting also included time for common prayer and the celebration of Mass. In addition, the friars spent a cheerful evening at a local inn, which offered regional specialties. The friars of Graz set a fine example of fraternal hospitality. Next year’s joint Definitory meeting is planned to take place at the friary in Fribourg, Switzerland.
