During the Angelus on Sunday, October 6, 2024, Pope Francis announced the creation of twenty-one new cardinals for the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception on December 8, 2024. Among them is our confrere, Archbishop Dominique Joseph MATHIEU, OFM Conv.

Friar Dominique was born on June 13, 1963, in Arlon, Belgium. He made his simple profession on September 23, 1984, and his solemn profession on September 20, 1987. He is affiliated in perpetuum to the Provincial Custody of the Orient and the Holy Land. He was ordained a deacon on April 1, 1989, and a priest on September 24 of the same year.
He currently serves as the Archbishop of Tehran-Ispahan, Iran. He was consecrated a bishop at the Basilica of the Twelve Holy Apostles on February 16, 2021, through the imposition of the hands of His Eminence Cardinal Leonardo SANDRI, assisted by His Eminence Cardinal Mauro GAMBETTI and His Excellency Archbishop Ignazio BEDINI as co-consecrators.
