On May 12, 2019, the Franciscan Missionary Sisters of Assisi in Romania celebrated the 100th anniversary of their presence in Romania with a solemn Mass at the parish church in Hălăuceşti, Romania.
Sister Juliana MALAMA, the Mother General of the Congregation, was present with members of her Council. The Most Reverend Petru GHERGHEL, Bishop of Iași, presided, and Friar Jude WINKLER, the Assistant General for the Conventual Franciscan Federation (CFF), read a congratulatory letter sent from the Minister General of the Friars Minor Conventual, Friar Marco TASCA.
The Conventual Franciscan Friars have worked with the Franciscan Missionary Sisters of Assisi ever since the women’s institute was founded by Mother Angela Maria DEL GIGLIO and Friar Giuseppe Antonio MARCHESELLI in 1702. The Franciscan Missionary Sisters of Assisi are now present in many countries around the world, often after being invited there by the friars. The Sisters’ presence in Romania, in fact, was a response to an invitation by the friars to care for orphans of the First World War in Huşi and Hălăuceşti. There will also be celebrations for this anniversary in Huşi on September 1 and Valea Mare – Bacău on October 6, 2019.
