On June 7, 2024, a conference was held to learn more about the extraordinary painter commonly referred to as the “Master of St. Francis.” He was the first to create the paintings and decorations in the Lower Basilica of the Basilica of St. Francis in Assisi. His work was carried out sometime between 1255-60. The conference about him took place in the Cimabue Hall of the Hill of Paradise Conference Center at the Sacred Convent in Assisi.
The “Master of St. Francis” was probably an artist friar, who accepted the honor and great responsibility of being the first to depict St. Francis in the Basilica as an “alter Christus.” One of the speakers at the conference was Friar Marco MORONI, the Custos of the Custody of the Sacred Convent. Another speaker was Costantino D’ORAZIO, the Director of the National Gallery of Umbria. From March until June of 2024, his gallery hosted an exhibition on the work of the Master of St. Francis. The conference marked the solemn conclusion of that exhibition.
Next, the conference took the opportunity to honor Professor Sergio FUSETTI, who celebrated his 50th anniversary as the chief restorer in the Basilica of St. Francis. His work served to ensure the beauty and protection of that monumental complex, which enshrines the relics of St. Frances. Many friends, and the representatives of some local civil institutions, attended the anniversary celebration as well.
Professor FUSETTI also donated an exclusive guide to the frescoes of the Master of St. Francis, which are found in the central nave of the Lower Basilica.
The Franciscan community expressed its gratitude by providing a festive lunch in the refectory of the Sacred Convent. Among those present was His Eminence Cardinal Mauro GAMBETTI, the former Custos of the Custody of the Sacred Convent, who had come for the conference.
