On February 26, 2021, the municipality of Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia, awarded our confrere, the Most Reverend Stanisław DOWLASZEWICZ, Auxiliary Bishop of Santa Cruz de la Sierra, with the “Cross of the Order of Capitán Ñuflo de Chávez” and declared him an “Illustrious Son.” The award was given during a solemn Mass to commemorate the 460th anniversary of the foundation of the municipality.
Bishop Stanisław received this honor in recognition of his thirty-five years of uninterrupted pastoral service in the local Church of Santa Cruz de la Sierra. On March 13, he will celebrate twenty years as a bishop, thirteen of which he served as the Director of Youth Ministry in Bolivia.
The unanimous decision to grant our confrere this recognition came through an official declaration issued by the Santa Cruz de la Sierra City Council and its Mayor, Angélica SOSA DE PEROVIC.
Bishop Stanisław arrived in the city of Montero, Bolivia in September of 1986. He served as the Pastor of the Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes Church in Montero (1989-1992), and the María Asunta Church in Villa 1 de Mayo (1992-1996). He was a chaplain in the Bolivian armed forces from 1987 to 2000 and served as an extraordinary confessor at St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican during the jubilee year of 2000. On December 21, 2000, Pope Saint John Paul II appointed him as an auxiliary bishop of the archdiocese and a collaborator with Julio Cardinal TERRAZAS SANDOVAL. He was consecrated a bishop on March 13, 2001, by Cardinal TERRAZAS himself. In the Bolivian Episcopal Conference he was in charge of the Youth Section (until today). He performed other services in the archdiocese and was the director of various commissions.
