From Wednesday, November 6 to Friday, November 8, 2024, an international conference entitled “Redescubriendo a un genio: Luca PACIOLI” (Rediscovering a Genius: Luca PACIOLI) was conducted in Mexico City, Mexico.

This Conventual Franciscan scholar is internationally known for having laid the scientific foundations for double-entry bookkeeping; and is recognized as the father of modern accounting. The conference explored this figure who, in addition to being an economist, was a mathematician and scholar of geometric solids.
Born in Sansepolcro (Arezzo), Italy, he was a contemporary of Piero DELLA FRANCESCA, with whom he discussed high-level mathematical ideas. He was also a friend of Leonardo da Vinci who illustrated the geometric solids in his works. Friar Luca passed away in his hometown in 1517.
The conference was organized by the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México in collaboration with the Dicastery for Communication of the Holy See, with financial support from the Mexican association for business excellence, “Grupo Salinas.” Professors from various Italian and Mexican universities were invited, as well as the Mayor of Sansepolcro, Fabrizio INNOCENTI and the Councilor for Culture of Sansepolcro, Francesca MERCATI. Over the course of three days, the conference featured presentations on Luca Pacioli the man, the Franciscan, and the scholar, offering a comprehensive portrait of our confrere and his historical and cultural context.
The Minister General, Friar Carlos TROVARELLI and Friar Felice AUTIERI were invited on behalf of our Order. Friar Autieri delivered a lecture entitled: “Luca PACIOLI: The Man and the Franciscan.” The Rector of the Antonianum University in Rome, Friar Agustín HERNÁNDEZ OFM, also participated with a lecture entitled “The Work of Luca PACIOLI and the Franciscan Charism.”
