On Tuesday, January 21, 2025, the Conventual Franciscan community in Odisha State, India, witnessed a historic event as Deacon Friar Aniyanta RAITA became the first friar from the state to be ordained to the priesthood. The Most Reverend Sarat CHANDRA NAYAK, Bishop of Berhampur, India, officiated the sacred rite which took place at 10:00 a.m. at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in the village of Antaraba, Gajapati District, State of Odisha, amidst an atmosphere of faith, reverence, and joy.
On Wednesday, January 22, 2025, the newly ordained priest celebrated his first Mass at 10:00 a.m. at the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary to Elizabeth Catholic Church in Sargiasing, India. The event was a significant moment of thanksgiving and jubilation for the faithful.
The momentous celebrations were graced by distinguished dignitaries, including Friar Michael EARALY, the Minister Provincial of the Province of India; Friar Sinto ANTU THIRUTHEL, the Delegate of the Provincial Delegation in India (Andhra Pradesh – Telangana); and Friar Sebastian VADAKEKATTEZHATHU, Director of the joint mission in West Bengal. Parish priests Fathers Jose NAZHIYAMPARA and Pious DIXON were also present, along with other priests, friars, and religious sisters, adding to the solemnity of the occasion.
The ordination and the celebrations that followed, reflected the vibrant faith and unity of the local community. The celebrations were enhanced by traditional cultural elements and by the heartfelt participation of the villagers. Thus an unforgettable spiritual experience was created for all who attended.
This historic milestone for the Conventual Franciscans in Odisha highlights the growth of vocations and the enduring mission of spreading the Gospel and Franciscan charism in the region.
