Road and Drainage System
for Amala Nagar (Kerala State, India)
The Province of St. Maximilian Kolbe in India of the Order of Friars Minor Conventual has proposed Social Project No. 16/2025, entitled “Construction of a Road with Interlocking Paving Blocks and a Drainage System for the Residential Settlement of Amala Nagar.” This project aims to improve the living conditions of twenty-one poor families by creating adequate infrastructure to improve ease of access to the area and water drainage, thus ensuring a safer, healthier, and more sustainable environment.
The project is being implemented in Millupadi, a locality within Aluva, in Ernakulam District, Kerala State, in southern India. The area of Amala Nagar, located in the village of Veliyathunad, is a vulnerable community, where many families live in difficult economic conditions..
Their houses, built in 1996 with the support of Caritas Antoniana, are located in an area prone to frequent flooding due to its proximity to a paddy field and the sloping nature of the terrain. Over the years, the lack of an adequate drainage system and an accessible road has worsened the difficulties faced by the local community. During the rainy season, water stagnates in residential areas, causing damage to buildings, compromising hygiene and sanitation conditions, and negatively affecting the health of residents, especially children. The drainage system installed by local authorities is insufficient and not properly connected to the houses.
To address this situation, the project has included the construction of a road with interlocking paving blocks and the development of an effective drainage system capable of ensuring proper rainwater runoff and improving access to the area. This intervention will significantly improve the quality of life of the beneficiary families by reducing health risks and promoting more dignified living conditions.

- The project was funded in full by Caritas Antoniana. Work has begun but is not yet completed, as the funds arrived at the start of the rainy season, necessitating a temporary suspension of activities. Work is expected to resume with the arrival of the dry season.
