The day began with Mass and Morning Prayer in Spanish. Friar Jorge Arturo DOBLES ULLOA, the Provincial Custos of the Provincial Custody of Mary, Mother of Mercy in Central America, presided. In his homily, he recalled that the Gospel of John begins with Jesus asking the first disciples, “What are you looking for?” (John 1:38), and ends with the question to Peter: “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” (John 21:16), which corresponded with today’s Gospel reading. The entire Gospel is a love story between the Lord God and his Bride, the Church, which is renewed each day. In the Holy Spirit, there is always a renewed springtime in which we take part. Even today the Lord asks us: Do you love me?
At 9:30 a.m., the secretaries of the seven working groups presented their summaries in the Chapter hall. They had already been translated into the four official languages of the Order, allowing the work to proceed quickly. This was followed by an open-floor discussion, where anyone who wished could add to, or elaborate on, the topics discussed. A noteworthy detail: the auditors were also given an opportunity to share their reflections.
Among the positive highlights observed over the past six years—both by groups and individual friars—was the unanimous appreciation for the work and methodology introduced by the new Projects Office. Many are now requesting that problems, when possible, should be addressed using the same method: from concrete, detailed proposals to the discernment entrusted to the leadership of the Order.
One area where our efforts seem unable to bring resolution is the steady number of friars departing the Order, which in recent years has remained high and constant, even if in line with the other religious congregations. There were many speeches on this topic, but it was clear that no one had an easy, immediate solution. What seemed most appropriate was to engage in personal and communal renewal, because we all need to refresh our own enthusiasm for following Christ and renew our apostolic drive. We must ask the Holy Spirit for strength so that He may show us authentic ways to bring the Franciscan charism into the present.
At 4:30 p.m., the Capitulars met together to read the summary of the day’s presentations, as always, determining the areas that were fruitful and the areas that needed improvement. In addition, the text included a final section on proposed directions to take. This summary had also already been translated into the four official languages of the Order.
This was followed by several speeches, including one from Friar Stanisław NUCKOWSKI, the Provincial Custos of the Custody of the Holy Cross in Ukraine. He expressed gratitude for the friars’ support—through prayers, donations, and material aid. The situation remains very difficult, with needs continuing to grow due to the ongoing war. He gave heartfelt thanks to the Lord because, even while surrounded by death and suffering, the friars in Ukraine tangibly experience the protection of Providence.
Next, the Vicar General, Friar Jan MACIEJOWSKI, reminded everyone that a year ago, the Seraphicum—in collaboration with the Salesians—launched an annual course entitled: The Franciscan Pedagogical Itinerary. The course is open to all, especially those working in formation. Participation is possible both in-person and online.
The second session closed with the report of the Auditors of the Causes. Greetings addressed to the Chapter were read aloud and Friar Carlos TROVARELLI thanked everyone for the fruitful work of these past days, which has produced concrete insights for the future of the Order.
The opening of the third session is scheduled for tomorrow, Saturday, June 7, in Assisi. At that time, the crucial election of the Minister General will take place.
