On Tuesday, July 13, 2021, at the San Lorenzo da Brindisi International College in Rome, His Eminence, João Cardinal BRAZ DE AVIZ, Prefect of the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life and appointed by Pope Francis to serve as the Cardinal Delegate at the 2021 OFM General Chapter, joyfully announced that Friar Massimo FUSARELLI was elected as the new OFM Minister General for the 2021-2027 six-year term.

Friar Massimo was born on March 30, 1963. He made his temporary vows on July 30, 1983, his solemn vows on January 8, 1989, and was ordained to the priesthood on September 30, 1989.
He served as Provincial Definitor, a leader in vocation ministry, and the Director for Ongoing Formation. He was a Guardian several times and served as the Secretary General for Formation and Studies from 2003 to 2009. He served as the General Visitator for the Province of Naples, and again during the unification process of the Provinces of Northern Italy. He had currently been serving as the Minister Provincial of the Province of San Bonaventura in Lazio and Abruzzo and as the Guardian and Pastor at the Church of San Francesco a Ripa in Rome.
