On Saturday, May 15, 2021, ten friars were ordained at the hands of the Most Reverend Rodrigo Mejía SALDARRIAGA, S.J., Vicar Apostolic Emeritus of Soddo, Ethiopia. The event took place at the St. Catherine of Alexandria Catholic Church in South C, Nairobi, Kenya, and was conducted in accordance with the Covid-19 protocols issued by the government’s ministry of health.
Those attending included the Minister Provincial of the Province of St. Francis of Assisi in Kenya, Friar Obed KAROBIA; the Vicar Provincial and Pastor of the St. Catherine Church, Friar Francis KANYIRI, and a number of faithful.
The newly ordained priests are Friar Francis Mutuku KIIO, who has been assigned to work at our postulancy house in Ruiri–Meru, and Friar Bernard Waweru MWANGI, who was assigned to assist at the National Shrine of Mary, Mother of God in Subukia, Kenya. The two newly ordained priests are members of the St. Francis of Assisi Province in Kenya.
Five of the newly ordained deacons are also members of the St. Francis of Assisi Province. They are Friars Bernard Ndung’u KAMAU; Peter Otieno ONYANGO; Jackson Mbonge MAWEU; William Mwirigi KILEMI; and Friar Vincent Onyango OPUBA. The other newly ordained are members of the Province of the Franciscan Protomartyrs in, Zambia. They are Friar Pethias KAFULA; Friar Patrick MULENGA; and Friar Davies LUNDA. The new deacons are in their last year of theology studies at Tangaza University College in Nairobi.
In his moving homily, the bishop encouraged the newly ordained friars to take up their new responsibilities with humility and minority in the footsteps of St. Francis of Assisi, who always sought to conform his life to that of Christ.
