Project No. 21/2026 –
Construction of the Ground Floor of the Friary
in Yagma (Ouagadougou), Burkina Faso
The Provincial Delegation in Burkina Faso of the Order of Friars Minor Conventual has proposed Pastoral Project No. 21/2026, entitled, “Construction of the Ground Floor of the Friary in Yagma (Ouagadougou), Burkina Faso.” It is aimed at consolidating the Franciscan presence in the city of Ouagadougou and creating the necessary conditions for the development of a future permanent fraternity at the service of the local Church.
Burkina Faso is a West African country with a population of over seventeen million. The Catholic community represents approximately 22% of the population and is constantly growing. The Order of Friars Minor Conventual has been present in the country since September of 2001 and carries out its mission through the witness of fraternal life, the proclamation of the Gospel, the celebration of the faith, solidarity with the poor, and care for the sick, in the spirit of Franciscan simplicity.
The Order currently maintains a friary at the parish of Sabou in the Diocese of Koudougou, a filial house at the local medical center in the same area, and a friary in Ouagadougou that houses the postulancy program. Over the years, the growth of the mission and the expansion of its pastoral activities have highlighted the need to establish a new permanent presence in the Yagma area. The Yagma area offers favorable conditions for pastoral ministry and for the future development of the Franciscan mission.
In 2011, the Delegation acquired a plot of land in Yagma, approximately ten kilometers [6.2 miles]from the current postulancy house and a short distance from the National Shrine. The construction project originally planned for the site experienced a significant delay due to a temporary reduction in religious staff and the priority needs of the mission. Today, however, the growth of the Order’s presence in the country, and substantial contributions from the Provinces of the Order, have make it possible to resume the construction program in a concrete way. In addition, current regulations require allocated land to be properly developed through permanent structures, making this an especially appropriate time to begin construction.
The project calls for the construction of the ground floor of the future friary in Yagma, the first phase of a larger building program designed to support the life of the fraternity and its pastoral mission. The planned building will include spaces necessary for the friars’ community life, a chapel, rooms for meetings and formation activities, service areas, and other essential facilities for carrying out pastoral activities and coordinating apostolic initiatives.
The construction of the new friary will strengthen the Franciscan presence in the country’s capital by providing a suitable home for a future permanent fraternity and fostering more effective collaboration with the local Church. The spaces designated for meetings and formation will also support evangelization activities, the formation of the faithful, pastoral gatherings, and various ecclesial initiatives serving the local population.
The Province of the Immaculate Mother of God in Poland (Warsaw) has already approved the project and allocated a significant contribution toward its implementation. The Italian Province of St. Joseph of Cupertino (Abruzzo-Molise-Puglia) has also expressed its concrete financial support for the initiative. Thanks to this fraternal collaboration between different Jurisdictions of the Order, this project has become an important step forward in strengthening the Franciscan mission in Burkina Faso.
The project is currently in the fundraising phase and at the initial stage of construction.
