Restoration of the Friary
of St. Anthony at the Baths “La Vigna”

The General Curia of the Order of Friars Minor Conventual has proposed Project No. 40/2026, entitled “Restoration of the Friary of St. Anthony at the Baths ‘La Vigna’ (Rome, Italy).” Submitted on September 21, 2026, the project aims to comprehensively restore the building so that it can serve as a place of formation for students from the Order’s various Jurisdictions. Located in Rome, the friary is one of the General Houses of the Order and falls under the jurisdiction of the Minister General.
Fifty years after its last major renovation, the building is in a state of widespread deterioration, making comprehensive restoration necessary. The building’s main problems concern building services, bathrooms in individual rooms and common areas, the kitchen, interior doors, and windows. In addition, water seeps in under the first-floor terraces, while rising damp affects the floors and walls at the ground and basement levels. These conditions limit the full use of the house and require renovation work to restore the areas that are currently unusable.
The project calls for the complete renovation of all bathrooms, with minor changes to partition walls, where feasible, to improve accessibility and usability. Interior windows and doors will be replaced with soundproof models, and exterior ones with units that provide adequate thermal insulation. The work will also include replacing the terrace roofing, restoring and renovating the kitchen areas, remediating the basement laundry room, and installing ventilated crawl spaces to combat dampness. The project will also improve the insulation of the exterior walls and repaint all interior spaces.
A significant portion of the project will involve the complete renovation of the electrical, plumbing, and drainage systems, along with the replacement of the heating and air conditioning systems. Solutions aimed at reducing energy consumption will be implemented, and alternative energy generation systems will be installed. The choice of modern and eco-friendly materials will guide the building’s restoration, while respecting its original structure and reducing maintenance costs.
The restoration is expected to take one year. It will improve the existing spaces and make currently unusable areas available again. The goal is to provide a functional home suited to community life and to the formation of students from the various Jurisdictions of the Order, in accordance with the principles of simplicity and stewardship of the Order’s heritage. Restoring the friary will thus help provide an environment for formation capable of supporting the transmission and continuity of the Franciscan charism.
