Water Storage for the Formation House
in Mzuzu (Malawi)
The Conventual Franciscan Delegation of Our Lady of the Angels in Malawi, belonging to the Province of the Franciscan Protomartyrs in Zambia, proposed Pastoral and Formational Project No. 44/2026, entitled “Water Storage for the Formation House.” Submitted on August 26, 2026, the project aims to ensure an adequate water supply for the Franciscan formation house for postulants in Mzuzu, in northern Malawi.
The opening of the Mission in Malawi was approved by the Ordinary Provincial Chapter of Zambia in 2004, and missionary activities began in 2008. As part of their ministry in the Diocese of Mzuzu, the friars are building a formation house for postulants. However, the community has been struggling to secure a steady supply of clean, safe water, which is necessary to protect health, prevent disease, and meet basic daily needs such as drinking, cooking, and personal hygiene.
The friars have committed themselves to ensuring access to water for the formation house and the surrounding community. The property now has a drilled well and the friars have connected the formation house to the municipal water supply using their own funds.
However, the community still lacks adequate storage tanks to maintain a sufficient water reserve. This shortage leaves the community vulnerable to scheduled power outages, pump failures, and interruptions in the municipal water supply. It also limits the development of self-sustaining activities, such as raising poultry and pigs and growing vegetables.
To address this need, the project calls for the purchase of two 5,000-liter [1321-gallon] water tanks and the construction of the supporting structure, as outlined in the budget. The cost also includes labor and transportation.
Having a reliable water reserve will help the formation house meet its needs more consistently and will support activities aimed at sustaining the community. The installation of the tanks will also facilitate rainwater harvesting, thus contributing to the responsible use of resources and the care of our common home.
