In 2014, the Capuchins left their friary in Würzburg. For many generations, they had been in charge of pastoral ministry at the “Käppele,” a church located above the city of Würzburg. It is a pilgrimage destination and is rich in tradition. Later, ministry at the Käppele was entrusted to a diocesan priest, but he retired last year.

A friar from our Conventual Franciscan community has taken over the role of chaplain. Since January 1, 2024, there have been two chaplains at the Käppele Church: Friar Franz-Maria ENDRES and Friar Josef FISCHER. Each day, they go up to the mountain from their friary in the city center. On Sunday, September 15, 2024, they celebrated the 200th anniversary of the consecration of the Käppele Church.
The Most Reverend Franz JUNG, Bishop of Würzburg, Germany, presided over the festive Mass. Back in 1803, when the state confiscated church property, many churches, monasteries and art treasures that belonged to the Diocese of Würzburg disappeared forever. During his homily, Bishop JUNG stated: “The fact that the pilgrimage to the Käppele did not stop, and that the consecration of the church took place many years later, is certainly thanks to the Maria Schmerz Confraternity, which has been supporting the pilgrimage since it was founded in 1754.” There was also warm applause when ten new members were admitted to the Confraternity, including two young people.
During the service, Bishop JUNG especially thanked Friars Franz-Maria and Josef for their commitment to performing pastoral ministry at the “Würzburger Käppele,” regarded as a “gate to heaven.” After the Mass refreshments were offered in the garden of the former friary , where praise for both friars continued to be heard. Ad multos annos [for many more years]!
