On Thursday, May 9, 2024, a momentous occasion took place in the religious history of India: The Conventual Franciscan friars of the mission in India [West Bengal] celebrated the 10th anniversary of their presence in West Bengal. The day resonated with gratitude and joy as Friar Joplang THONGNI made history by becoming the first vocation from this mission to profess vows.
This milestone was commemorated at a solemn Mass celebrated at the Mary Help of Christians Church in Mawthong, India. The Most Reverend Wilbert MARWEIN, Bishop of Nongstoin, India, presided. The Minister Provincial of the Province of India, Friar Michael EARALY, officiated the ritual of formally receiving Friar Joplang’s vows.
A number of notable figures attended this event, including the Delegate of the Provincial Delegation in India (Andhra Pradesh–Telangana), Friar Paul POTHANATTUVELIYIL, and the Director of the Mission, Sebastian VADAKEKATTEZHATHU. Fellow friars, religious sisters, the local pastor and members of the community were also present.
In a moment of reflection, the Minister Provincial emphasized the power of communion, stating: “Our strength lies in coming together and sharing in the grace of the Lord as we work to realize the Kingdom of God.”
This historic occasion not only marked a significant step forward for the mission in India, it was also a testament to the enduring spirit of faith and unity within the community.
